How to Prepare for Your Next Acting Audition: Tips from the Experts

The Unreturning 27

Auditioning can be an exciting but nerve-wracking part of your acting journey. Whether you’re applying for a drama school, like Italia Conti, or you’re aiming for a professional role, knowing how to approach the audition process and the audition itself can make all the difference.

At Italia Conti, we’ve seen thousands of talented performers walk through our doors, and because of this, we know a thing or two about auditions. One thing that’s always clear is that preparation is everything.

If you’re wondering how to master your audition for acting, this guide will help you. Our expert tips will help you feel confident in the audition room.

How to Audition for Acting Roles/Places: Our Top Tips

Know What You’re Auditioning for

Sounds obvious, but before anything else, research the project, company or course you are auditioning for. If it’s a school like ours, understand the values of the school and the performance styles the school focuses on. If it’s a professional show, learn about the director, production history and the casting manager.

Then, tailor your choices to reflect the specific opportunity you hope to land.

Choose the Right Material

Following on from the above, choosing the right material is crucial. Choose monologues or scenes that demonstrate your strengths, but that are also in line with the role/school you’re auditioning for. Avoid overly used pieces unless you’re confident you can bring something unique to them.

If you’re applying for acting training at Italia Conti, check the specific requirements for our courses and follow the audition guidance closely.

Practice, But Let It Breathe

Rehearse your pieces until you feel secure, but don’t over-polish them to the point that they become forced or stiff. Make sure they’re alive and adaptable. Make sure you practice sufficiently in front of friends, tutors, or family, and record yourself to spot specific areas you could improve on.

Also, remember that the selection panel or casting crew don’t want perfection, they want truth, spontaneity and a glimpse of your potential.

Be Present in the Room

Nerves are completely normal but try not to let them take over completely. Greet the panel with confidence, take your time getting started, and don’t rush your performance. This is your chance to make an impression, so make the most of it.

Also, take on board any direction/feedback, and demonstrate that you’re open to collaboration. That’s something schools and directors love to see!

Know Where to Audition for Acting Opportunities

Knowing where to look for auditions is also an important step. At Italia Conti, we offer clear pathways for all of our performance-based courses. We also offer audition prep courses, such as our pre-vocational Audition Ready course.

For professional roles, look into platforms like Spotlight or the Mandy Network.

Before You Go

Learning how to audition for acting placements, roles, or jobs is a skill. But with proper preparation, focus, and a willingness to develop, each audition becomes a very exciting opportunity.

  • “I have just graduated from Liverpool Theatre School with a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre. I wanted to do the BA Hons (Top Up) in Professional Arts Practice course to further develop my skills for the industry. It is the perfect balance between academic writing and creativity. I already have seen improvements, both in my academic and performing work, and I now really value the ability to critically reflect on past experiences in order to improve my current skills.”

I am working with driven, passionate, likeminded people within all different realms of the performing arts industry. I find that the course is very tailored to each individual and the content is broad enough to apply to everyone but specific enough to challenge each person within their abilities. I find the course to be a place where I can collaborate and interact with people who I’d never had met otherwise. I only look forward to what the next few months of the course bring and feel more motivated than ever.”
