How to Start an Acting Career: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

How to Start an Acting Career
Acting Career

Breaking into the acting world can feel overwhelming. From training and auditions to finding representation, there are many steps involved. The good news is that you don’t need to have it all figured out at once.

If you’re wondering how to start an acting career, this guide will walk you through the essentials.

1. Begin with Training

Even the most talented performers benefit from structured training. Acting isn’t just about memorising lines; it’s about understanding and developing ‘your instruments’ – your body, your voice, your imagination, your psychology. Classes in voice, movement, improvisation, text analysis, and stagecraft are key in building the skills foundation that supports talent. Complete beginners can start with part-time classes to build confidence and explore different techniques.

At Italia Conti, we offer a range of general courses that you don’t need to audition for. This includes our Italia Conti Associates courses. These classes are offered to students between 3 and 18 years old. Whether just for recreation or as a serious step towards a long-term career in performing arts, the emphasis is on enjoyment and first-class training.

2. Create a Professional Headshot and Showreel

Your headshot is your calling card in the acting industry. It should look professional, natural, and represent who you are.

Alongside this, a short showreel can showcase your range and give casting directors a clear idea of your potential. Early on, your showreel doesn’t need to be complicated; clips from short films, student projects, or even filmed monologues are a great way to get started.

3. Gain Experience Through Auditions

Auditioning (especially self-taping) is an essential skill that you need to master to start a real career in acting.

Start by auditioning for local theatre, student films, or community projects. Each experience helps you grow in confidence and understand what casting directors are looking for. The important thing is not to be discouraged by rejections; they’re a normal part of the process.

4. Consider Finding an Agent

While you don’t need an agent straight away, representation can open doors to bigger opportunities, and ensure you’re supported in professional engagements. Agents help you access auditions you wouldn’t otherwise find, and they also help negotiate contracts on your behalf. Research agencies carefully, ensure they are reputable, and never pay upfront fees.

5. Build Credits While You Study

Acting careers are built step by step. While you train, take on roles in short films, theatre, or even background work. These experiences help you develop your CV, grow your confidence, and expand your network. By the time you graduate from formal training, you’ll already have credits and a reputation to keep building on.

Ready for an Exciting Acting Career?

Starting an acting career takes time, patience, and the right training, but with dedication and consistent effort, you’ll be well on your way to building a successful and exciting future in the industry.

  • “I have just graduated from Liverpool Theatre School with a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre. I wanted to do the BA Hons (Top Up) in Professional Arts Practice course to further develop my skills for the industry. It is the perfect balance between academic writing and creativity. I already have seen improvements, both in my academic and performing work, and I now really value the ability to critically reflect on past experiences in order to improve my current skills.”

  • “I have found that my first term at Italia Conti has been better than I could’ve imagined. I am working with driven, passionate, likeminded people within all different realms of the performing arts industry. I find that the course is very tailored to each individual and the content is broad enough to apply to everyone but specific enough to challenge each person within their abilities. I find the course to be a place where I can collaborate and interact with people who I’d never had met otherwise. I only look forward to what the next few months of the course bring and feel more motivated than ever.”
