How to Get Better at Singing: Practical Tips for Finding Your Voice

Practical Tips for Finding Your Voice

Whether you’re dreaming about life on stage in the West End or you just want to feel more confident belting out your favourite songs in the shower, learning how to get better at singing starts with practical, consistent habits. Whilst most great singers are born with a lot of talent, this talent is nurtured through technique, practice, and a holistic awareness of their body.

In this article, we’re going to talk through some realistic ways to improve your singing voice, helping you build confidence and enjoy the process.

Step 1: Warming Up Like a Pro

Just like a dancer wouldn’t launch into a routine without warming up, your voice needs a similar routine to help it stay healthy and flexible. Start with gentle humming, lip trills (vibrate your lips whilst blowing air through them). Even just 5 minutes of warming up can make a huge difference to tone, vocal efficiency, and your vocal health.

Step 2: Breathing

Learning how to sing often starts with the breath. Shallow, chest breathing may limit you and make you feel tense. Try lying on your back and putting your hands on your abdomen. As you breathe, think about letting your lower belly expand as you inhale.  Building easier efficient breathing can help you sing for longer and with more confidence.

Step 3: Recording Yourself

It might feel awkward at first, but recording your singing voice is one of the fastest ways to spot areas for improvement. You might notice pitch issues, unclear dictation, or moments where your breath runs out. It’s important not to be too hard on yourself here. Use these recordings as a tool for progress.

Step 4: Take Lessons

If you feel like you’ve done all you can at home, it might be time for some professional guidance. A good vocal coach will help you identify your vocal type, break bad habits, and safely expand your range. If one-to-one lessons aren’t an option, think about joining a choir or singing group.

Step 5: Be Patient and Consistent

Improving your singing voice isn’t an overnight fix; it requires daily practice and some dedication. Even if you just set aside 15 minutes per day, this will help you build vocal strength and muscle memory over time.

Step 6: Learn About Your Voice

Understanding your instrument is one of the most powerful things you can do. The best singers know how the voice works physically, from vocal anatomy to resonance and articulation.

Completing professional training is one of the best things you can do for learning about your voice and improving your singing abilities. At Italia Conti, students on our BA Musical Theatre Course receive quality, personal training on singing, as well as dance and acting, helping them become multi-faceted students who are ready for an exciting career on the stage.

Your Voice, Your Journey

Learning how to get better at singing is a personal journey that involves technique, self-expression, persistence, and getting to know yourself. But with the right tools and mindset, anyone can improve their singing voice.

  • “I have just graduated from Liverpool Theatre School with a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre. I wanted to do the BA Hons (Top Up) in Professional Arts Practice course to further develop my skills for the industry. It is the perfect balance between academic writing and creativity. I already have seen improvements, both in my academic and performing work, and I now really value the ability to critically reflect on past experiences in order to improve my current skills.”
