Acting for Screen

Acting for Screen

Acting for screen is a specific part of performing that requires some focused training.

Whilst stage acting is about big movements and emphasised expressions, screen actors need to create a more intimate relationship with the lens. When acting for TV/cinema, you must deliver performances with subtlety, micro-movements and incredible camera awareness.

Learning these skills takes some practice. At Italia Conti, we offer a range of acting courses that will help students to prepare for a career in front of the camera.

Acting for Screen: What You Need to Know

The camera captures every subtle eye movement, change of facial expression or shift in body language. So, as screen actors you need to be incredibly aware of your physical body.

You need to find the right balance between subtlety and acting, to deliver compelling and believable performances. Whether it’s a close-up or a wide shot, you need to use your face, eyes, body, breath and stillness, to convey the story and communicate your character.

Another important consideration is the camera itself. You need to have an understanding of lighting, camera angles, microphones and production kit. Knowing how these elements work will enable you to position yourself correctly, adapt your delivery and ensure your performance translates well on screen.

Stage Acting v Screen Acting

  • Voice and Presence: In the theatre, actors must fill the space with their voice and energy to ensure they connect with the audience, regardless of the size of the venue. On-screen, however, microphones capture even the smallest details of vocal delivery, requiring actors to develop precision and subtlety in their vocal work.
  • Physicality and Movement: Stage performance often demands expansive, intentional movements to convey meaning clearly to audiences seated far away. On screen, where every detail is magnified, smaller, more controlled movements are necessary to create a truthful and impactful performance. Actors need to refine their physical awareness and adaptability to suit these different environments.

FAQs

What’s the main difference between theatre and screen acting?

The main difference is the most obvious one… the location of the audience. In the theatre, the audience tends to be further away whilst on screen the audience can see every single detail.

How can I improve my screen acting?

One of the most important things you can do is to record yourself and watch it back. Whether you’re an aspiring actor with no professional training, or an accomplished performer with several credits, watching your own performance is incredibly important.

The next best thing you can do is to practice, practice, practice. By rehearsing, performing and watching back, you can perfect your screen acting.
