For performers still aiming to break into the industry, versatility is essential. It’s important to feel at home both on stage and in front of the camera.
Acting for camera courses prepare performers to navigate the specific demands of screen work: subtlety of expression, technical awareness of lenses and lighting, continuity, and emotional truth in close-up performance. At Italia Conti, our 3-year acting training builds a strong foundation in performance technique that naturally equips students for successful work on camera as well as on stage.
Acting for camera focuses on performance skills tailored to film, television, digital media, and recorded audition work.
Unlike stage acting, where projection and broad physicality are key, screen acting requires nuanced micro-expressions, precise timing, controlled breath, and active listening that feels real in front of a lens. Training in this discipline improves an actor’s ability to convey inner life, react authentically, and maintain continuity across takes.
The three-year acting course at Italia Conti (validated by the University of Chichester) is a professional, conservatoire-style programme designed to develop well-rounded actors with technical proficiency, creative resilience, and career readiness.
Across the three years, students receive comprehensive training in:
The curriculum balances theory with hands-on practice, helping students graduate as balanced performers. While the course encompasses all aspects of performance, screen preparation is integrated throughout.
Italia Conti’s acting programme includes multiple elements that support acting for camera development:
Students learn how to shape their voice to fit the subtler demands of screen work, where projecting to a vast theatre is less important than clarity and emotional presence up close.
In both classical and contemporary modules, students explore motivation, listening, and truthful reaction, skills that are essential when performing for camera.
Movements that read on stage may appear exaggerated on camera. Italia Conti’s movement training helps actors calibrate their physicality for different environments.
Specific on-camera exercises familiarise students with eyelines, camera marks, hitting technical cues, and maintaining consistency across multiple takes.
Throughout the course, students take part in studio work, staged productions, and recorded scenes. These opportunities bridge classroom training with professional practice, enhancing confidence and fluency on camera.
Graduates of the acting course leave with both a rich artistic toolkit and practical screen skills, including:
These skills support auditions, agent representation, casting opportunities, and early screen work.
This course suits aspiring actors who want a deep, practice-led training experience that prepares them for careers in theatre, film, television, voice work, and digital media. Whether you’re passionate about dramatic performance, screen acting, or performance creation, the programme provides a balanced, industry-relevant foundation.
