Those Who Trespass

We live in an increasingly divided world. The left, the right, the haves, the have nots, the makers and the takers (as Sir Colin Turner calls them). Huge amounts of land up and down Britain, previously run by local councils, have been given to private developers who regenerate the areas, promising to offer jobs and opportunities to the surrounding communities. In these privately run centres, the developers (who also manager these vast estates) have police powers and total control of the type of people they wish to attract to their new apartments, shopping malls and office buildings. The cost has been the shattering of often tight-knit communities that have lived in these areas for generations. Many of these people do not have the skills or money to become part of these new towns and cities. This exclusion and the increase in guarded, heavily surveyed communities has created a deepening mistrust and fear between the two groups. Crime rates have fallen but fear and anxiety are exponentially on the rise. This play looks at the impact of these developments on both of these groups of people and imagines the consequences when the two worlds finally collide.
