Starting a career in film acting can be exciting and equally challenging. Screen acting differs from stage acting in a number of ways – specifically in how the actor utilises their skills and training to communicate the story and their characters effectively. In this article, we’ll run through the basics of film acting, giving you tips for developing your skills and landing that first role.Film Acting vs. Stage ActingThese two mediums are incredibly different and so is the type of acting required. In stage acting your voice and actions need to reach the whole audience, right to the back row. Movements, facial expressions and body language need to be emphasised to ensure you can give the best performance, to the whole audience. But, in film, everything is close up. Even the smallest change of expression and body movement will be detected by the camera, so subtlety is key. Film acting also involves working with technology like camera dollies, booms and various lighting. Learning to work in this environment is a key part of acting for the camera.Skills You Need for film actingHere are just a few of the skills you need for a successful career in film acting.Facial expression: On camera, facial expressions say a lot. You should be able to display emotion in a convincing but natural way. Voice: You don’t need to release the sound much further than where your partner or the microphone is (unless the scene requires it), but your speech must always be clear and not forced. Camera awareness: One of the biggest differences from stage acting – for film acting you must learn to position yourself appropriately to the camera. Adaptability: You need to be ready to react to last minute changed lines, scenery, cheating angles, or to improvisation.
