Representation, Auditioning and Work During Training
Our students undertake intensive vocational training. Engagement with the profession must be managed carefully alongside teaching, rehearsals, assessments and performance commitments.
Italia Conti encourage students and industry contacts to follow the Best Practice Guidelines For Meeting and Offering representation to New Graduates published by the PMA.
Our Approach
1st and 2nd Year Students
First and Second Year students are generally not permitted to undertake professional work during training. Exceptions can only be made when permission is given by the Head of School, on a case-by-case basis.
Signing with Representation in 3rd Year
3rd Year Students are permitted to sign with an agent after their West End Showcase.
Course and Qualification Focus
Our priority is to support students in successfully completing their course. Where appropriate, alternative assessment arrangements may enable students to undertake professional opportunities while meeting their course requirements. Permission for auditions or professional work may be declined where these clash with key assessment milestones, technical rehearsals or public performances.
Professional Work
There are points during the third year when professional work can be more readily accommodated, and these vary by course. We encourage students, agents and course leaders to work together to explore opportunities that support professional development alongside successful completion of training.
Collaborative Connections
We build collaborative relationships with agents, agencies and other industry contacts to support our students’ transition into the profession. By maintaining open communication and a shared understanding of training commitments, we work together in the best interests of each student.
Apoyo al estudiante
Students have access to 1:1 tutorial support to discuss their route to signing and to ensure they fully consider their options.
Wellbeing-focus
We want students to feel safe, supported and confident when engaging with creative professionals. This approach helps establish positive working relationships as students begin their careers.
Our Expectations
We have identified four key areas that our students are encouraged to focus upon when considering representation:
To communicate professionally with industry at all times, by email and not through social media, and to ensure they are transparent with agents about where they are in their journey to signing.
To work closely with Italia Conti to make informed decisions around signing, early professional work and the compatibility with the successful completion of their course and qualification.
To understand the contractual commitments they are agreeing to including commission, fees and exclusivity.
To make the decision to sign at a suitable defined point in their training (once students have completed their West End Showcase.)
