James Nelson-Joyce trained at Italia Conti and has built a compelling career at the heart of contemporary British drama. He appeared in Channel 4’s Shameless before gaining wider recognition through BBC productions including The Nest and Time, and the BBC and Amazon series The Outlaws.
His film credits include Steve McQueen’s Lovers Rock, part of the acclaimed Small Axe anthology, and Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant (2023). He stars alongside Stephen Graham in Steven Knight’s series A Thousand Blows and features in the BBC drama This City Is Ours with Sean Bean — a body of work that places him firmly among the most compelling actors of his generation.
James-Nelson Joyce was awarded the Caroline Aherne Award for Best Breakthrough Talent (RTS NW Awards 2025) – This City is Ours.
He also won Best Actor at the Florence International Film Festival (2024) for his role in the film Reputation.
